Weird, not perfect
Last week, I rewatched the documentary Residente. It's René's story, as he travels the world to record an album, visiting the countries where his DNA comes from to make music with local artists.
Of course, I had to play the album again afterwards—from start to finish. The first single is called "We Are Abnormal" (okay, that, but in Spanish, haha!), and I could see why I like it so much. It's so on-brand for me!
There's a line that translates as "the ugliest part of the flower is the stem/ beauty feeds on mistakes", and it's always resonated with me.
Beauty is weird because it stands out. What's different catches our eye. It's funny how we can strive for this unnatural idea of perfection, thinking it's the goal when actual perfection is kind of disturbing.
In my modelling days, I remember a makeup artist talking about how freaky it was to be completely symmetrical.
Once a person "fixes" an asymmetry on their face, everything else looks unbalanced. This leads to correcting more “issues” that weren't there in the first place. And, before you know it, we are in uncanny valley territory.
When I meet a new client, I start the coaching process with a symmetry exercise. It always gets a few laughs, quite often masking the disgust! Seeing yourself perfectly symmetrical is a shock, but, as we know here, we are more than our looks. And there's a lot of information behind an image, too.
