Retail and connection
I've always been fascinated by the way fashion connects people. We use style to find our tribe, express who we are, spark curiosity, and, well, to keep certain people at a distance, too.
I saw this firsthand while working at Brown Thomas in Dublin, a luxury department store.
One of my favourite things about working there? The outfits.
The dress code was very flexible, and I looked forward to seeing what my colleagues would wear every day. And the customers seemed to be excited to see our outfits, too.
It was fascinating to watch who they'd instinctively gravitate towards for help. They'd spot someone whose style resonated with them, and that's who they'd trust. It was an unspoken connection, a mutual recognition sparked by style.
And that's why I don't believe in restrictive dress codes. Particularly in spaces like fashion retail. It's not just about looking good. It's about building trust, creating relationships, and expressing identity.
I have a little fun fact for you. One day, Kate Moss was in the store presenting her brand. As she walked up the stairs, she looked at me and said, "I love your outfit, the sparkles".
And that story wouldn't have happened if we hadn't connected through style.
